The quest for Vancouver’s ultimate burger began in earnest last week when the members of ‘Burger Supremacy Vancouver’ met for lunch at Moderne Burger (2507 West Broadway) in Kitsilano.
There is a definite family-run feel to Moderne Burger, and the decor nicely captures the 1950s diner feel. As a group of six, we were somewhat disappointed to learn that they only have four-person booths, but we pulled up two chairs on the end of the booth, set the mood with a round of cherry cokes and were ready to order.
There is no denying that Moderne Burger makes a tasty burger and serves it up with a heaping plate of first-rate, hand cut french fries. While there was nearly universal agreement on the tastiness of the burger, there was as much agreement that the bun wasn’t up to the task. Take a full size steak patty, add tomato, cheese, onions, bacon and you’ve got yourself a handful, but somehow the bun was too thin and lacked the necessary absorbency to hold all of the above. Trying to keep the burger in the bun was a bit of a challenge, even for those who cut the burger in half. Don’t get me wrong, I like a juicy burger, but I needed a new napkin after just about every bite.
The burger fixings were well received, the fries are great and there is seriously enough on each plate for two people. This is a big burger platter and we all wisely chose to stick with a soda, but if you’re really up for feeling full, the milkshakes here are also very good.
Overall we rated the Moderne Burger a 7.5 – just a bun away from a nine or better.

Stay Hungry my Friends
The Burger Supremacy group in Vancouver was inspired by the Burger of the Month club in New York.
Our quest is to find the best hamburger in the Lower Mainland, and every year we'll vote on the Supreme Burger award. Our motto: "Stay Hungry my Friends."
The club held its inaugural meeting recently at Moderne Burger on Broadway. Our ratings will be summarized in the first BS Report, to follow soon.
The ground rules? We are rating hamburgers only, in their totality (patty, bun, fixins). Not french fries, not the service, or the location. All of those factors are considered peripherals, and while we may comment on those things, they won't sway the verdict on the burgers themselves.
And it should probably go without saying that we are not rating chicken burgers or novelties like sliders.
Stay tuned while the votes are counted for the BS Report on Moderne Burger. In the meantime, this bus ad was spotted while a group of us were on our way to our first meeting, which seemed like an auspicious way to start. Clearly, Fatburger thinks they have the best burger in town. Will the Burger Supremacy agree? We'll soon see.
